No to NATO - International Demonstration in Strasbourg

On the 4th April NATO will be holding its 60th anniversary meeting in Strasbourg. International demonstrators of Anti-war and Anti nuclear groups from across Europe are meeting to protest and demand the dissolving of NATO. The reason, they saw, for its formation in the first place was because of the so called threat of the Warsaw Pact but this was dissolved in 1991. Far from NATO thinking along the same lines they have in fact expanded. The demonstration will be calling for the end of nuclear weapons and NATO’s aggressive military adventures.

Anyone interested in going to the demonstration can book a ticket from National CND. Their Telephone No is 0207 278 6694. Coaches will be leaving London at 9am on the 3rd April and coming back from Strasbourg on the 5th April the cost is £70 plus a £3 booking fee.

Local Nottingham Protest Saturday 4th April

For all members who cannot make Strasbourg we are having a local protest outside the Council House to highlight the aggressive stance that NATO holds. The event will be from 12.30 to 1.30pm.We will have information to give to passers by and a statement which can be read easily. If we do have plenty of people we hope to walk round the square so that we are more visible. Do try your best to come and inform anybody who you think might be interested, I know it is not Strasbourg but we can still make an impact locally. If anybody can think of any slogans which can be put on placards please give us your ideas.

At Raynesway we will be joining the Trident Ploughshares to catch the workers leaving Raynesway plant at 4.pm to remind them of the horrors and effects that one nuclear bomb caused when it was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and 9th 1945. Raynesway is where the nuclear fuel that drives the engines of the nuclear submarines is produced. Do try your best to come and mention it to anybody you know.

Nagasaki Day - Saturday August 9th

On August 9th at 2.00pm we intend to form a circle outside the council house to commemorate Nagasaki day. Do try your best to come down and participate. We hope to use the same placards we will be using on August 6th.

At 7pm we will be at The Sumac Centre on Gladstone Street, Forest Fields to hold an event to reflect on both Hiroshima Day and Nagasaki Day. Everyone is welcome and if you would like to participate by singing, playing an instrument, reading a poem or saying anything which you think is appropriate then you will be most welcome.

On The Verge

Despite what has been described as a nationwide attempt by the police to stop the film being shown, renowned Brighton activist group Smash EDO, working in association with SchNEWS will be bringing 'On The Verge', a documentary about their struggle, to Nottingham Uni on Wednesday April 23rd.

The Documentary will be shown at 7:00pm in room C11 of the Portland Building on University Park Campus, accompanied by a speaker from Smash EDO who will take questions and be available for discussion. Entry will be FREE.

A synopsis:

"In 2004 a group of Brighton peace campaigners began to bang pot and pans outside their local arms manufacturers EDO MBM in disgust of their part in the Iraq war. This has grown into the Smash EDO campaign, which has cost the company millions, been the subject of large scale police operations and has tested the right to protest in the UK.

Using activist, police and CCTV footage plus interviews with those involved in the campaign, On The Verge tells the story of one of the most persistent and imaginative campaigns to emerge out of the UK's anti-war movement and direct action scene.

The film is already being screened on the Smash EDO Tour which has begun, and dvds will be available to buy in April - with proceeds going to Smash EDO.

Police attempts to stop On The Verge being screened has also begun. Last week the premiere screening at the Duke Of Yorks Cinema in Brighton was pulled at the last minute after police invention, and several venues due to host the tour and film have been subjected to police threats - for more see SchNEWS 625."

Please come and support Smash EDO, by seeing this film you will not only have an opportunity to learn more about the group and network but also strike a blow for activists' rights to free speech.

NB: Bear in mind that because of efforts by local authorities and police to stop the showing of the film a last minute change of venue might happen, in the event of this we will do our best to notify everyone, and we will be at the Portland Building to redirect you to where you need to go. Please come prepared for this.
