No Trident Replacement campaign in Nottingham

25 March 2006

On 25 March we held an awareness day in Nottingham to highlight the fact that during this period in government Tony Blair will decide whether to replace Trident, update Trident or scrap it altogether. Up to now there has been no open debate on the question - replacing Trident is estimated to cost up to £25 billion

This was our first effort to make people in Nottingham aware of the situation. We gave out several hundred leaflets which on one side highlighted the cuts to Nottinghamshire County Councilıs budget, and the effect it would have on local services and on the other side how else proposed £25 billion for Trident replacement could be spent.

Postcards were available for people to send to their local MPs which call for a full parliamentary debate and urge them to oppose the replacement of Trident. We also had a petition the petition calling for non-replacement of Trident which many people signed. All in all we had a very good response.

Many thanks to the clowns who gave out leaflets and generally clowned about, two tricycles from Sumac which carried posters and by local Unison who gave us information about the cuts Nottinghamshire County Council is bringing in.

As this is such very important campaign for CND we have decided that we will the following stalls outside of Nottingham City Centre:
Saturday 6th May from 11.30 in Beeston
Saturday 17th June from 11.30 in Sherwood.
