Hiroshima and Nagasaki : 60 Years

August 6th 2005 was the 60th Anniversary of the first use of the atomic bomb, on Hiroshima

These Commemoration Events took place in Nottingham:

Silent Vigil in Market Square, 12.45-1pm

The first local event was organised jointly by Nottingham CND and Nottingham Greenpeace Supporters. Around 60 people ormed a silent circle in front of the council house, centred by a huge CND symbol laid in flowers on the stone. A small group of women peace campaigners in geisha costume led a session of peace message writing by the public on silk strips which, tied to long strings, formed a striking display. Many people stopped to look, read the banners, or join in for a few minutes, and the stillness made it a powerful witness amid the bustle of Market Square.

60th Anniversary Commemoration, 7pm at the Arboretum

The evening commemorative gathering took place at the Arboretum and featured readings of poetry and prose and quiet musical performances. Candles illuminated the gathering dusk as we made the final procession down the hill.

Special showing of "Dr. Strangelove"

As an alternative way to reach people at this 60th anniversary, Nottingham CND organised a special showing of the satirical film "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" at the Broadway cinema in Nottingham. 60 people came to see the film, many not linked with CND, and they heard an introduction by Jenny Maxwell of West Midlands CND which linked the film with the current situation regarding nuclear weapons. NCND's stall was in the foyer, and cinema staff even continued sales of peace merchandise while we were all viewing the film.

Throughout the weekend and in the weeks leading up to it, we were pleased by the very friendly relations with City Council and Broadway, and with Jane Burd and Michelle Clarke of Greenpeace. We look forward to developing worthwhile partnerships for further events.
