Remember and Reflect on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Day

Hiroshima Day - Wednesday August 6th

On August 6th we will be commemorating Hiroshima Day outside the Council House at 12.30. As it is the 50th year since CND was formed we are planning to make placards to wear with Remember Hiroshima, Remember Nagaski written at the top with our CND symbol and 50 years for peace written underneath. Do try and turn up.
At 2.45pm we are planning to catch the Red Arrow on Parliament Street into Derby in order to catch the Skylink Kinch Bus to Raynesway. At Raynesway we will be joining the Trident Ploughshares to catch the workers leaving Raynesway plant at 4.pm to remind them of the horrors and effects that one nuclear bomb caused when it was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and 9th 1945. Raynesway is where the nuclear fuel that drives the engines of the nuclear submarines is produced. Do try your best to come and mention it to anybody you know.

Nagasaki Day - Saturday August 9th

On August 9th at 2.00pm we intend to form a circle outside the council house to commemorate Nagasaki day. Do try your best to come down and participate. We hope to use the same placards we will be using on August 6th.

At 7pm we will be at The Sumac Centre on Gladstone Street, Forest Fields to hold an event to reflect on both Hiroshima Day and Nagasaki Day. Everyone is welcome and if you would like to participate by singing, playing an instrument, reading a poem or saying anything which you think is appropriate then you will be most welcome.

On The Verge

Despite what has been described as a nationwide attempt by the police to stop the film being shown, renowned Brighton activist group Smash EDO, working in association with SchNEWS will be bringing 'On The Verge', a documentary about their struggle, to Nottingham Uni on Wednesday April 23rd.

The Documentary will be shown at 7:00pm in room C11 of the Portland Building on University Park Campus, accompanied by a speaker from Smash EDO who will take questions and be available for discussion. Entry will be FREE.

A synopsis:

"In 2004 a group of Brighton peace campaigners began to bang pot and pans outside their local arms manufacturers EDO MBM in disgust of their part in the Iraq war. This has grown into the Smash EDO campaign, which has cost the company millions, been the subject of large scale police operations and has tested the right to protest in the UK.

Using activist, police and CCTV footage plus interviews with those involved in the campaign, On The Verge tells the story of one of the most persistent and imaginative campaigns to emerge out of the UK's anti-war movement and direct action scene.

The film is already being screened on the Smash EDO Tour which has begun, and dvds will be available to buy in April - with proceeds going to Smash EDO.

Police attempts to stop On The Verge being screened has also begun. Last week the premiere screening at the Duke Of Yorks Cinema in Brighton was pulled at the last minute after police invention, and several venues due to host the tour and film have been subjected to police threats - for more see SchNEWS 625."

Please come and support Smash EDO, by seeing this film you will not only have an opportunity to learn more about the group and network but also strike a blow for activists' rights to free speech.

NB: Bear in mind that because of efforts by local authorities and police to stop the showing of the film a last minute change of venue might happen, in the event of this we will do our best to notify everyone, and we will be at the Portland Building to redirect you to where you need to go. Please come prepared for this.
